Historical Mecklenburg County Death Records

Mecklenburg County death records go back further than the 1912 state registration law. The county maintained registers of births and deaths from 1853 to 1896 as required by Virginia law. These are now on microfilm at the Library of Virginia and cover deaths recorded in the county during that period.

The registers from this era list the name of the deceased, race, sex, date and place of death, cause of death, age, birthplace, occupation, marital status, and names of parents. That is a lot of detail for records from the 1800s. Some county clerks also created their own indexes for this period, so it is worth asking at the Library of Virginia whether an index exists for Mecklenburg.

Between 1897 and 1911, Virginia had no statewide death registration law. Most counties, including Mecklenburg, did not record deaths during this period. For deaths in that time frame, you need to rely on church records, cemetery records, family papers, and newspaper obituaries.
